Want to get started with the art of bonsai, but not sure where or how to begin?

Our beginner's course is the perfect way to jump start your bonsai journey.

The series is hosted by our very own Tony Bywater, who has been a member of the Christchurch Bonsai Society since the mid ‘70’s and has taught our beginners classes for more than 25 years!

Tony is largely self-taught in bonsai. As a professional agriculturalist he has a good understanding of how plants grow, and has learnt a lot from workshops with Ben Oki, Tony Bebb, John Hanby, Nobuyuki Kajiwara, Salvatore Liporace, Lee Wilson and Robert Steven.

This series is limited to 15 participants and early registration is essential.

There is a $75 registration cost, which includes:

  • five sessions, including presentations, demonstrations and hands-on workshops

  • two trees for you to work on and progress in the years to come

  • soil, wire, and other materials to aid in your work

  • your set of notes to refer back to

  • your one-year membership to the Bonsai Christchurch Society

There are two beginner courses this year. One starting at the end of March in Bishopdale, and one starting the end of June in Halswell.
